New BLHA Website PDF Print E-mail
Written by George Sipe
March 2009

In early March the BLHA launched our new website. It features an updated look, greater integration with Reflections and more services to our members. Be sure to take a look, as always at http://BerkeleyLake.org.

On the new website you will always find the latest edition of Reflections featured at the top of the right sidebar. As before, past issues are in a special archive going back to 2002. All editions feature images of their front cover (it is interesting to see the evolution over time). A subset of Reflections articles that focus on BLHA matters also appears directly on the website. Past articles include all of 2008, but over the next several months will include articles back to 2002. Some other non-Reflections articles of interest have been and will continue to be added as well.

All of this great content is now searchable. Additions to the articles may be monitored via the new BLHA RSS Feed.

Reflections on the Lake PDF Print E-mail
Written by George Kaffezakis
March 2009

There are times when I wish that I had ponied up the extra few pennies for caller ID. Such a time was New Year's Day. There we were, the Kaffezakis clan, snug as warm bugs in a warm rug in our warm house enjoying the warm glow of the fireplace when the telephone jarred us from our pleasant warm reverie (warm being the operative word). On the line was the disembodied voice of Scott Lee extolling us to action – "Bryan Stuart has gone crazy - Polar Bear plunge in thirty minutes at the beach." With no time to think (actually Becky thought it through and astutely avoided hypothermia), the kids and I donned our warmest bathing suits and we all headed to the beach. Heeding the call to action (Bryan and Scott are true leaders – though I noted that Scott was not wearing a swimsuit, hmmmm....) and fortified by liquid courage (at least me), about ½ dozen strong plunged into the 48-degree water, commemorating the first officially sanctioned crazy BLHA act of the year. Later, I met some of our new neighbors and found out that they, too, rang in the New Year by christening their dock with plunges. I think they'll fit right into the community.

It's Tomato Dreamin' Time Again! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Frances Winslow
March 2009

This time last year we had yet to dig the first shovel full of dirt. Now we may soon have to start a waiting list of gardeners for our second year of the Berkeley Lake Community Garden. The support and enthusiasm for our little garden has exceeded anything I could have expected. I do not know if I could count the number of times someone has said to me what a wonderful thing it is to have a community garden in Berkeley Lake. Our success is probably best measured in how many new friendships were formed, rather than the amount of produce any of us actually took home. The camaraderie of sharing the work, some plants, some good laughs and ideas has been a rewarding experience. We were not without our tomato hornworms and squash vine borers, but not a one of us gave up our plot for this year. I think now that we all have the gardening bug (no pun intended) we would like to continue and improve what we started.

Fishing Report PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Hunkapiller
March 2009

Well I have to start off this report with an apology that I haven't written this report already. But, as with a lot of things, this got away from me. Unreal that it's 2009. My son just turned a year old on February 12 and I'm thinking he's about ready to go fishing with me. Last year we ended up with a great fishing tournament but with only 7 teams and 6 boats. Not a bad day on the water, everyone caught a limit of fish and had a great time.

Randy Johnson and his son Scott fishing out of the little green boat named "Catfish" tied Bill Hunkapiller and guest Scott Peterman for the lead with both teams weighting in 4 fish at 4 lbs and 10 ounces. Young Eugene Lee won Big Fish for the adult category beating all the adults with the largest fish. Henry Newlin wins Youth Big Fish. Both anglers did a great job and it's great to see young kids getting into fishing on our lake. In fact as part of encouraging kids to fish, I am doing away with any tournament fee for kids under 18 years of age. The fee of $25 will only apply to adults. All fishing tournament money goes directly towards improving our fishing, i.e. stocking of bait fish. Of course we will always accept donations and you can even add additional money in your BLHA yearly membership specifically for the "bait fish fund."

December 2008 President's Message PDF Print E-mail
Written by Steve Seitz
December 2008

As we come to the end of 2008 and enter the holiday season I hope all of you are in good spirits. Our members have experienced many fun and memorable events throughout the year with their family and friends. The last BLHA event of the year is our "Holiday Party", December 14 in the Chapel.

I would like to extend my thanks to all the community volunteers who contribute their time and guidance to the Board of Directors and our committees. These individuals, along with all of you who participate in these events, help to make Berkeley Lake a great place to call home.
