As discussed in the May and September membership meetings, the Board was asked to evaluate concerns and determine a means to secure access to the lake. The Board has approved the placement of an access gate at the boat ramp for the following purposes:
- Security/Liability Protection: Limit entrance to members only by providing a coded access to the lake, similar to the picnic and beach areas. Respond to members' complaints and concerns regarding unauthorized access to the lake.
- Health & Safety: Remove boat ramp as "walkway" for geese accessing the Chapel parking lots and lawn; areas frequently used by families, Chapel guests, children at play and our community events.
Once installed, the gate will have a key-press pad with a unique code to allow members access to the lake for watercraft registered with Berkeley Lake Homeowners Association and displaying BLHA stickers and numbers.
Further details will be communicated prior to installation of the gate. Members who trailer their boats and will need access to the new security code are requested to contact the BLHA Board. |

From time to time I reread some of my past articles and I am struck by how much I sound like a broken record (parents, you may have to explain to young ones what a record is). It seems I'm stuck on the refrain of what a great place Berkeley Lake is to live in. Well, the theme of this article remains the same. Stock market is down, unemployment is up, couldn't sell a house if you wanted to (and thankfully I don't want to). Yet, at the end of the day we can retreat to such a beautiful refuge as Berkeley Lake where we have made our home. So what am I going to rave about this time...nature or community – how about both?
Let's start with Mother Nature in the most surprisingly random way. This morning my son thought he was hallucinating when he saw Harry Potter's Patronis (young readers, you may have to explain to parents what a patronis is). But no, it was simply a buck with a nice rack of antlers meandering down Lakeshore before cutting across our driveway to our neighbor, Diane's, backyard. How cool is that?? Yet I know every one of us have had the opportunity to watch a heron glide effortlessly across the lake, a fox or coyote dart along the road just outside the headlight beam, or a turtle lumber across the road (note to self – slow down and enjoy the road - wildlife almost always loses to cars).

The Berkeley Lake Homeowners Association came together September 27th for our fall event – the Ricotta Regatta and "Itza" Party. Something for everything... decorations for boats, costumes for bodies, mustaches for faces, the sweet sounds of Cadillac Tattoo for ears, and for hungry mouths: pasta, salad, and all the trimmings!

While Milton may have Lost Paradise in 1667, I believe we have found it in our little corner of Atlanta. The dictionary defines Paradise as "any place of ideal beauty or loveliness". Curiously, there is a photo of Berkeley Lake in the margins, as an example. Okay, maybe not – but there is also another definition of Berkeley Lake and that is community. Time and time again, I've witnessed the kindness and compassion of the community coming together to support a neighbor in a time of need. And unlike Blanche DuBois, as long as we live here, we feel no need to depend on the kindness of strangers, as neighbors we regard as friends surround us. The spirit of community that imbues (yup, had to look this word up in the dictionary too) Berkeley Lake is amazing. But, back to more mundane matters of business, lake quality business, that is.

As our summer season comes to a close and students return to school we can reflect on how enjoyable the lake and the facilities have been this year. We are planning our fall meeting now. Note the date has changed to September 27. We look forward to seeing friends and new members, as we prepare to have another great gathering.
This year's fall theme will be Italian Dinner "Itza Party" with lotza music and refreshments. Volunteers are encouraged to contact Kay Lee to offer assistance, get involved and have FUN the evening before. Based on interest, we will be having a "Boat Regatta" also known as the "Ricotta Regatta" leading up to the evening meal and festivities with tunes by John Zibrida's Cadillac Tattoo. Individuals interested in registering for the Regatta can contact Kay Lee or Carol Seitz for details.

Berkeley Lake's community celebration was enjoyed by all with great weather and fun! This taxpayer funded community event was once again a big success through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. Thank you.
