Thanks to our BLHA events committee chaired by Phil Gilbert, along with the many volunteers that made the May 17 Caribbean "Castaway" event a great evening for all the members and their guests. For our May meeting, I asked longtime Berkeley Lake resident Mr. Pete Rolader to attend as our special guest of honor. In reviewing the history of the community and our Homeowners Association, he is one individual that definitely stands out. However, before I go into this further, I would like to provide you some of the interesting points about our young and growing community.

In 1948, Frank Coggins created Berkeley Lake by the development of Berkeley Realty and Investment Company (BR&IC)

  • acreage was noted to have been purchased along the river for $6 an acre
  • the Community consisted of 700 acres
  • Lake Berkeley was constructed in 1950
  • property owners of Berkeley Lake, all 25, met and formed the Lake Berkeley Civic Association (LBCA) in 1953 to promote the interest of Berkeley Lake and its property owners; telephones, electricity and an all-year road around the lake; improve lake ecosystem by reducing weeds and managing fish population
  • Lake Berkeley Civic Association (LBCA), a volunteer membership was formed and dues assessed of $6 per year
  • activities for the year included; BBQ, Regattas, Fishing Contests and Holiday Parties

Beach Safety & Rules PDF Print E-mail

beach safety rules

Since last year there have been many wonderful improvements made at the beach, chapel and surrounding areas. Now that the lake is at full pool and many enhancements have been made more people than ever will be enjoying the facilities.

The Berkeley Lake residents can easily be described as one big family. We often spend our weekends together enjoying each other's company. What we need to be cognizant of is that we are all stewards of the lake. Respect for all is of utmost importance. The beach and picnic areas are private property for use by BLHA members. With that said, we all have the ability and responsibility to ask non-members to leave the premises in a polite manner. The beach area in particular may often get used in the late evenings. Any disturbances such as loud music, profanity, or noise made by members or their guests will not be tolerated and may subject a member to the loss of their privileges. In most cases disturbances that may occur will be by the BLHA members unknowingly. A simple and polite request by those affected to those who are causing the disturbance should be enough to change ones behavior. Since we are a family, bringing law enforcement into the situation should only be done under extreme situations. All incidents should be reported promptly, (within 24 hrs), to the BLHA Board and/or BLHA Security contact. For safety purposes, unsupervised young adults using the facilities after hours as a gathering place for parties, should be handled by the police. BLHA members or the Security contact are encouraged to evaluate the situation before taking action.

As a reminder, all water craft must be registered with the BLHA and have a decal/registration number on its side. Allowing friends or family to bring unregistered water craft onto the lake is not allowed, even for the day. Registering a non-members water craft as your own is not allowed, and not respectful to fellow BLHA members.

The BLHA Board will meet on a regular basis to discuss any issues necessary to maintain the lake as a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Remember to go to the BLHA website, http://BerkeleyLake.org for further details on BLHA Rules and Boater Safety.

We hope all of you have a safe and fantastic summer.

water issues

Ahh... Sitting at my dock there are those transcendental moments when the interplay between light, wind, and clouds above and water below come together to create a sublime vision. One of an undulating wave of shimmering jewels sparkling on the surface of a very still and deep body of water. It is in those moments I can truly exhale. I was basking in one of those moments, when I was rudely brought back from my reverie by.... you guessed it, a boat going way too fast to be able to enjoy the moment. I believe most of us moved to the lake looking for those special moments where we can put our harried workday paces on pause. Remember when you see your own wake; you may have lost an opportunity to exhale. A more pragmatic issue, particularly after the drought (which has stressed much of our canopy) and lowered lake levels, is shore erosion, which recently claimed one of my poplars as a victim. We do not have a large lake so the slower one goes, the longer the boat ride and the more one enjoys the scenery, company and of course, favorite beverage.

community gardening

A very short time ago we were talking about the possibility of having a communal garden near the beach. Now that possibility is becoming a reality. A retaining wall was installed, some topsoil was added, and the site was graded. Now gardeners are marking off plots, adding some amendments to the soil, sowing seeds and putting transplants in the ground. Not knowing just how many gardeners might come out of the woodwork and not wanting to turn anyone away, we settled on 4' x 8' beds.

This is a very manageable size, and it affords us much more flexibility in accommodating everyone who wants some gardening space. It will also allow us to do some planting for community use. This is going to be a learning experience for all of us. So far, the feedback has been very positive with the consensus being gratitude that we finally have something like this in our neighborhood. There has been quite a bit of manual labor involved in preparing the beds, but somehow when you are out there making new friends in the process it does not seem so much like work. The garden is taking shape slowly and will no doubt be a work in progress for some time. We welcome your company and your comments. If you come over to see what's going on, just be mindful of the work that has gone into digging and preparing the beds, and please walk only in the pathways between them. We have had some woodchips delivered to the Community Gardening site, which will eventually be put down in the pathways. When that's done, the beds will be more clearly defined and your shoes will stay a lot cleaner.

Currently, we have space for more gardeners. If you have thought about it and decided to give it a whirl, you can send me an email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) with any questions.

Capital Improvements PDF Print E-mail

Fellow Lake Dwellers,

We have made quite a bit of progress this year and, as you can see, some of the ideas collected from you last year are starting to take form. As the weather continues to improve, most of you have probably made a trip to the beach and noticed some of the improvements there. The 100' stone wall is complete and a permanent stone fire pit was constructed. We also installed some new sod/seed so please tread lightly. New low voltage lights were installed in addition to some adjustments to reduce light pollution. The organic garden project is ready for planting.

Over at the picnic area we have started preparing for the new pavilion. We removed diseased and construction flagged trees. It may be difficult to get off the new flagstone dance floor but should you wish, there are some new picnic tables and benches to enjoy. The security gate at the picnic has been repaired which should enhance privacy and we are working on some new lighting schemes for safety.

Going into the second half of 2008 we will continue with the pavilion plans as our main priority. We hope to have the project complete by next lake season. Also expect a new security gate protecting our boat ramp to eliminate non-members from accessing the lake. As always, feedback is welcome. I have shared the master plan with many of you and heard nothing but praise from young and old for some of the things we are doing to make our lake more enjoyable for our families. Enjoy the summer.

Members and Volunteers, thank you for all your support in 2007. With your assistance and dedication, we succeeded in achieving several significant goals. First, we had fun with our family and friends with all the successful events. Second, with the assistance of volunteers and contractors, there were a number of ground maintenance and enhancement projects completed at the beach and picnic locations. Finally, the membership provided unanimous support during the annual meeting for the capital improvement projects proposed for the next two years. None of these could have occurred without you, our members.

2008 is already proving to be an exciting year, as we challenge ourselves with implementing capital improvement goals and planning our community events. This coupled with a very active "Community Calendar" is reflecting what some of us have already realized; we do not have enough weekends! This leads to the vision we are promoting this year, taking PRIDE in our community, as we Build Memories for Today & Tomorrow.
