By the time this report hits the press the lake will be returning to full pool and the construction and repairs should be almost complete. It's been interesting seeing the lake with this water level and I'm glad to say that I really didn't see as much trash in the lake as I was expecting.
This year I will be asking for assistance for someone who has the time to take water quality samples and deliver them to a local lab a few miles away in Norcross. We are all busy and I do not want to make excuses but it has been difficult for me to get water samples during the week with my work and travel schedule. So I am asking for a volunteer to run water samples so our lab can test for Fecal Chloroform levels between the first week of May until Labor Day weekend in September. Any volunteers please contact me at home, 770.242.1282 or via email

With the lowering of the lake BLHA / BLOKES members braved the cold on Saturday, February 10 to clean up the beach and picnic areas. The first project was the daunting task of removing over a dozen pipes that were once part of a dock structure from years past. We are pleased to report this was accomplished and the area adjacent to the dock is free of obstructions.

It has been my great pleasure to serve as your BLHA president this year. I feel that it has been a most joyous year, as well as one filled with progress. This is my fourth year serving on the Board and I will not be returning next year in accordance with our by-laws, however, it is not with a heavy heart that I step down. To the contrary, I am very happy that there are so many Board members returning next year and I know that the current momentum will only be accelerated. Next year will be busy and one to surely set the bar for the following years. Thank you all for the honor of serving as your president.
As you may know, the membership was down this year. Because we are an all- volunteer organization we rely entirely on membership dues to finance the many efforts throughout the year, and more importantly, only current members can vote. The new Board has stated that there will be a series of votes required within the first quarter of 2007 in order to improve the conditions at the Beach and the Picnic Grounds, and it is imperative that the voter membership be represented accurately.

The Regatta was brought back to life with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the City on September16th. Approximately 11 boats where creatively decorated along with the inhabitants on board. After honoring long time BLHA member Pete Rolader, BLHA hosted the annual Fall Luau. This event had an overwhelming turnout. Approximately 205 adults & 45 children enjoyed the Regatta and the Luau with good food and music.
A big"Thank You" goes out to all who participated and supported the event, BLHA, Chapel, and the City's Events Committee.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly....
The Good: 2006 has been a good year for our Lake. We tested several times for fecal chloroform over the summer months and I am happy to report that none of the reports indicated that we exceeded the recommended level for safe swimming. In addition, our introduction of lime and fertilizer, while causing the lake to turn a green color in the summer, kept the water dark enough so not to allow sunlight to penetrate to the depths of the lake therefore keeping submergent vegetation from growing. In addition we had a number of outbreaks of non-native plants in the lake reported by several concerned citizens. Most likely the infestation was due to an accidental introduction from a pond or aquarium, but they didn't have long to enjoy themselves due to a quick herbicide treatment from our staff biologist. In other words; we killed a lot of weeds. Also, I managed through personal time fishing on the lake and 3 fishing tournaments to remove over 425 pounds of bass from the lake. That is sorely needed due to overpopulation of bass. The money generated from the tournaments, BLHA and additional donations from citizens totaled $3,000 that went for stocking the lake with between 28,000 and 30,000 threadfin shad, a much needed bait fish for the bass.

At our Fall BBQ I asked Berkeley Lake resident Mr. Pete Rolader to attend as my guest of honor, and there I highlighted many of the contributions that Pete has made over the last 40 years to the BLHA and to the City of Berkeley Lake. I'm including his story in order to help others realize his great accomplishments and to inspire others to lead this community as he has done so many times in the past.
Pete Rolader is also our only living Lifetime Honorary Member of the BLHA, and has been since 1982. He has contributed to this City and to the BLHA greatly. In fact, he founded the BLHA in 1973 and was our first president.
In 1973, three separate individuals - all developers - each owned 1/3 of the lake bottom. The lake, itself, was maintained voluntarily by the Berkeley Lake Civic Association, representing less than half of the property owners. The dam was heavily forested and owned by a developer.
