Low Tide: A Fishing Saga PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bill Hunkapiller
March 2010

One of the primary reasons I moved to Berkeley Lake in 2003 was the lake. As an avid fisherman I wanted to be as close as possible to water. Berkeley Lake reminded me of my youth growing up on the Winter Park Chain of Lakes in Florida. However the difference here was that Berkeley Lake has very small bass due to over- population. I've written numerous articles about the small bass on Lake Berkeley, how we have used industry standard fisheries management techniques, under the supervision of a fisheries biologist, to try to improve the fishery from bass that are literally starving to death, to a healthy population. I have personally removed a couple thousand bass from the lake to help this effort. BLHA, along with donations from local fisherman, have stocked 50,000 baitfish for forage. We were making good progress but had a long way to go. The idea was to reduce the number of bass and increase the amount of food. Shan O'Gorman, our biologist, said it would take years, but eventually we would meet our goal. I asked, back in '03, what would be the best method to turn the lake around the fastest? He replied, drain the lake and start over. He said in a few years we'd have big, healthy bass. At the time I thought that would never happen.

December 2009

From overflowing to wading in the mud, our community along with metro Atlanta observed our share of weather in September. Our namesake, the lake, had risen an estimated 25 inches over full pool on September 21, to being lowered 10 feet below full pool during the next thirty (30) days.

Sediment Removal and Storage: BLHA Board and Committee members have been actively working to perform research; gather information and present findings to BLHA members at the October, November, and December monthly board meetings. A BLHA assessment report is on the website to summarize this activity and to assist in communicating to our membership.

Berkeley Lake Shoreline Improvement PDF Print E-mail

The City of Berkeley Lake has lowered the lake by ten (10) feet. BLHA and property owners have the opportunity to perform a number of tasks while the lake is down, from repairs to new construction projects. With all of these comes the challenge of maximizing our available time, while minimizing the impact to our wallets and time with family and friends.

Property owners living along the lake and considering removing sediment themselves or contracting, are requested to contact BLHA to ensure you are informed on the current permits and regulations associated with handling and storage of this material.

In an attempt to assist you in these undertakings BLHA would like to provide the following information.

In Memory of Gay PDF Print E-mail

Gay Smith with husband Coke

Berkeley Lake, and I think the entire world, lost a wonderful lady on September 12, 2009, Gay Smith. Gay passed just prior to her 77th birthday from cancer. But that is the sad part of her life and we should not dwell on that instead let's look at her life.

Gay was born Greyson Hancock in Nashville Tennessee on September 21, 1932 one of three (3) children born to E. Cliff Hancock and Greyson Love Hancock. She married Coke Smith in 1954 and they were married 55 years. Whenever I heard her speak to Coke she always addressed him as "sweetie" – 55 years and Gay still thought of him as her "sweetie". We should all be that lucky. They moved to Berkeley Lake in 1967 and have lived in the same house – 718 Lakeshore Drive. They raised four (4) children and while life threw them many curve balls – you would never know it by looking at Gay. She radiated joy and caring.

Gay was a talented artist, an evangelist, a lover of people, of life and a lover of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She not only attended Bible Studies throughout her life, she held many in her home – one of which I was lucky enough to be a part of. She loved cooking and sharing her home and she did this graciously and seemingly effortlessly. And she loved children – it was nothing for her to invite children into her home for art class or just playing around with all her wonderful paints and toys – and let's not forget the clown at all of the Fall Festivals.

Gay was a touchstone – all of us have friends that we care deeply for and would do anything to help in their time of need, but Gay had the rare ability to feel this way about virtually everyone she met. She would bring people from all different areas together focused on seeing the good in each other; and lasting friendships developed.

Municipal Election 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Written by George Sipe
December 2009
Carpenter / Donnelly / Lee

On November 3rd we elected the newest members of our municipal government. The council members-elect are: Anne Carpenter, Jim Donnelly and Scott Lee. Congratulations! Special thanks are in order to Bill Hunkapiller, Brian Strasburg and Steve Throckmorton for their community service in offering to serve and their participation in the process. Thanks also to our Homeowner Association Presidents for conducting the Candidates Forum, to our poll workers and others who contributed behind the scenes.

This was our first election in 4 years. Of 1,177 registered voters only 253 voted. Each voter was effectively a proxy for almost 4 others! While this is not unusual for us in a non- contentious election, we will hopefully do even better in the future. Our next election is in 2 years at which time we will select a new mayor and 2 council members.

In support of the election process, the Berkeley Lake Community Website (http://BerkLake.org) published election information, candidate statements, forum responses and provided other election support services. Infrequent (but timely) e-mail notices were also sent to all citizens. If for some reason you did not receive these important community announcements, be sure to add your e-mail address at http://BerkLake.org/signup.

Berkeley Lake Community Garden Presents! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Louise Gobron
December 2009

This October, the Berkeley Lake Community Garden hit the big time with an entry in the Atlanta Botanical Garden "Scarecrows in the Garden" exhibit. Joining over 120 stylized interpretations of a scarecrow were "Blake, the Scare-heron and Berk the Fisherperson" (get it – Blake and Berk), on display from October 1-31. Created by Linda Craigg, Carol Seitz, and Louise Gobron with phone and email consultation from Frances Winslow and many other Berkeley Lake Community gardeners, Blake and Berk withstood the torrential rains during construction and while on display.
