A Boat Regatta - "The Last Fifty Years" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bryan Stuart
June 2006
Presented by BLHA and the City of Berkeley Lake Saturday August 26, 2006

We are reviving a former Berkeley Lake tradition. Years ago residents from around the city elaborately decorated their boats for a shoreline parade a.k.a. Boat Regatta. See the 50th Anniversary Calendar, months of June and August for previous Regatta creations. In honor of the 50 year Celebration we are sponsoring a reenactment of this festive event. We encourage all residents, young and old, to decorate a boat, pontoon, kayak, etc. and exhibit your talent.

Highly coveted prizes will be awarded for Most Imagination, Best Use of Materials, Most Outrageous, and more. There will also be categories for Kids and Non-Motorized.

The first BLHA fishing tournament of the year was a huge success, even with inclement weather. Adding extra donations of $100 from Bob Caldwell, $50 from Scott Peterman, $25 from Shirley Bruno and $25 from Tom Dyer plus our entry fees, we raised a total of $325 from the April 1st tournament. So far, with funds from last year, the BLHA Fishing Team has raised a total of about $1200. We are working with the BLHA Board of Directors and expect to do additional stocking of shad later this year.

I will say that I'm pleased to report that the fish do seem to be getting somewhat bigger due to our efforts to remove bass and stock shad. Our fisheries biologist Shan O'Gorman removed 1800 pounds of bass 2 years ago and recommended, for us to achieve our goal, we need to remove bass at this rate for 3–5 years. I've pulled about 100 bass this year and with two additional tournaments and continuing efforts to remove bass, we are moving in the right direction.

I met Mildred Wilkerson in the Chapel kitchen 15 years ago. She had prepared her popular cheese and sausage strata dish for breakfast. Following the service that Sunday, I poked my head into the kitchen to compliment her on the tasty dish. Although Mildred had been cooking all morning, she was tastefully dressed in a beautiful sweater. In fact, she always dressed immaculately, in a handsome outfit with nails and makeup done. We took a liking to each other immediately and she invited me to stop by her home at 888 Lakeshore – the house with the stained glass windows. She had something she wanted to share with me.

Later that day, my husband Bob and I went over to visit. We took our son Bobby with us, who was probably 18 months old at the time. Mildred loved children, although she and Jack never had any of their own. We chatted for a while and admired her garden. She then presented me with a prized possession, her strata recipe printed on an envelope (Mildred and Jack were known for their frugality!). She told me she was no longer going to cook at the Chapel – it was just too much work for her. At the time of this meeting, Mildred was probably in her late 70s. She seemed to know I was a good cook and wanted me to carry on her tradition of preparing strata for Chapel breakfast. It was a job I readily agreed upon – anything to get that recipe! And, since then, once a year for close to 15 years I have prepared strata because Mildred asked me to.

Firstly, I would like to thank the 2005 BLHA Board of Directors, Mr. George Kaffezakis, and all the BLHA members who elected me to the Lake Maintenance Director position. George has done such an outstanding job over the years with the lake and thankfully has offered his assistance with some of the lake maintenance tasks. He has already spent a good bit of time educating me and getting me up to speed. My goal is, that the needs of boaters, fisherman, swimmers, native wildlife and fish will be met under my term of service. This is a balancing act at times, but one I believe has been well accomplished under George's term of service and I will do my best to continue his effort going forward. Over the last few months, George and I have been working with our lake biologist, Shan O'Gorman of ProPonds. Shan had recommended the placement of 100 tons of lime into our lake. Lime will help stabilize the pH level by reducing the current acid level. Just like Georgia red clay is acidic, so is the soil beneath our lake. Therefore, by adding the lime, we lower the acidic level. Consequently the placement of fertilizer in the lake becomes much more effective, and we will have a proper algae bloom. Why is this important? Well mainly for no other reason than weed control. Our lake is naturally so clear, that without the lime and fertilizer, we would soon find ourselves in a lake choked with weeds. This change will allow the free flow of water and recreational boating activity without clogging propellers, plus the ability for swimming without being tickled by submergent vegetation.

March 2006 President's Message PDF Print E-mail

Clay Keller, Julie and Bryan Stuart

"We Are All the Same People" I had the pleasure of discussing this phrase with one my favorite Berkeley Lake personalities, the fabulous Miss Kitty Dales. I had asked for her permission to use this phrase as a bellwether when crafting how I wanted to approach my duties as President of the Berkeley Lake Homeowners Association and she kindly agreed. No matter what organizations we belong to, or where we live in this great city, or what we believe to be true, we all benefit from the experiences and closeness that we all share.

I believe it's important to know who we are and how we have evolved as a community, and to rely on that common identity when choosing a course of action. We do have a strong sense of identity here in Berkeley Lake, and we honor our proud tradition of independence. A case in point is that our elections seem to illicit great emotion on all sides of an issue. Berkeley Lakers are a feisty breed, to say the least. I want to embrace those many personalities and communities that make up our beautiful city, I believe we are all in this together, and we will move forward together. We are special, because we say that we are and because we have the fortitude and vision to be who we want to be.

Fishing Report PDF Print E-mail

March 2006

Well it's that time of year again where the bass are getting active, thinking about spawning and are looking to fill their bellies. In previous reports I've written about favorite baits, lures and tactics on fishing. At this time of year I believe you can just about put a hook on a broomstick handle and catch a bass on our lake. I may actually try that theory this year just for kicks. Anyway, this report is a little different than others. I'd like to write about your last cast. This is not specifically a fishing report for our dedicated fishermen who are regularly on the lake. This is not a report targeted for getting more and more fishermen into our fishing tournaments. This is a fishing report for everyone, about the last cast you made.

I saw his last cast between bowl games and didn't think too much about it at the time. With deep scars from his war wounds, the cast was far from being as accurate and as pretty as some. The target was into the Gulf of Mexico from the sand beach. Just getting the bait between the shore and the sand bar was the goal and the leader, hooks and 2 ounce pyramid sinker found their mark. He commented that he was happy to see this pole again, as he purchased the pole sometime in the 1960's and had not seen it, since it had been in my garage for the better part of 20 years. The pole was nothing fancy, just a brown 11 foot Abu Garcia surf rod, recently rebuilt with new eyes and a new brass Penn reel. The original Mitchell reel it replaced had a very rough drag, due to years of salt buildup and rust.
